The Vanishing Leprechaun
Consider the alphabet: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ. These 26 marks have been rearranged in ways that can make you laugh, cry, worry, wonder, question, love, hate, and ponder. They’ve been arranged to form Hamlet, Tom Sawyer, the Bible, and the General Theory of Relativity.
The following puzzle reminds me of the magic of rearranging things. If you print the puzzle, cut out the image on the black lines, and rearrange it, then something strange happens. One of the leprechauns vanishes. First, you have 15 leprechauns. Rearrange the blocks and you have 14. Where does he go? Both arrangements are operationally correct, yet, logically it’s impossible for a leprechaun to simply disappear. Isn’t it?
You don’t have to cut and paste. Just click on the image. The image will rearrange itself for you. Just click on it again, and it will return to its original layout.)
