Knowing How To See
Because our perceptual positions determine how we view things, it’s important to learn how to shift our perspective to look at our subject in different ways. Leonardo DaVinci acknowledged the pitfall of being stuck in one’s own perceptual position, and he specified several ways to shift perspective such as writing out a problem statement several times using different words. Each time he changed the words, he changed his perspective.
Our perceptual positions determine how we view things. In the illustration below, if you sit still and focus on the dot in the center, you see two broken line circles. However, if you change your perspective by moving your head backwards and forward, something strange will happen.
